tt,MO)8 VD Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of

#O z<<G< < P ~+H>; Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
07Yh polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
q i}HJkOq jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of

:b & intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
b{s_cOr/ underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
+?[TH?2c+ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
tX cc#!'4C bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
bqN({p& Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
K5z *DYT its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
.JZoZ.FAb accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
RtGETiA\b mineral water.
yJc<;Qx 5J d&3pO The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
5Y#yz>B@ ] truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
5Az=)q4Q laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
:h=];^/E and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
$)vljM<< younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
G$}\~ dD and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
4K[ E3aA Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
VmH ok If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
t@QaxZIlt; seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters

D5Wo e&g, If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
Hh hN8t be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
q6f+tdg= heartbreak.
=LDzZ:' X #Gx %PQ` The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
#8MA+ themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
t* m04* } lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
)o;/*h%@ than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
g&!UaJ[#9 but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
-;20|US) u kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
L3GA]TI f his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
}pdn-# doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
=,$*-<p=3 icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
Bha#=>4FU in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
E;/WP!/. }(A`aB_ Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
y $|%K3 polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
1)pwR3(^Fz affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
]$Pl[Vegy your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
EudX^L5U<d comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
(hNTr(z his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
N;4 bEcWjp of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
Swz{5 J2C welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
$9+|_[ ]v. espresso kind of guy.
