l:14uWu| 0[92&:c, Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
4<S=KFT_ Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
$p\ 0/ his little pop masterpieces.
VX'G\Zz@h| y:VY8a 4 Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
zC WN,K` polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
q j*77 jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
,H5o/qNU`{ intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
f=Kt[|%'e underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
vve[.Lud' as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
ke5_lr( bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
Z]k+dJ[- Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
r95$( N its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
giu8EjzK accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
ufXU mineral water.
S3Sn_zqG \j~LxV The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
~n9- truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
'sN
(=CQ laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
%( o[Hsl and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
Bt1&C?_$T younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
t
C'@yX and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
6)Dp2 Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.

N If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
rw]*Nxgr seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
pxO?:B Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.

Q If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
Bi|XdS$G be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
~i)IY1m" heartbreak.
84$#!=v cWG?`6xU& The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
WQT;k0;T] themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
msiftP. lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
Q-LDFnOFwp than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
X#!oG)or but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
(e$/@3* kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
M&5;Qeoiv his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
Ni4*V3VB doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
yIdM2#`u icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
uBe1{Z in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
8v)PDO~D}A 0bQm:J[(# Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
p|D-ez8 polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
u/% 4WgA affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
$^2 j#]uX your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
]
g/%w3G comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
H:ar&o#( his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
tVN#i of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
E6-alBi% welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
