4J,6cOuW4 ,[p?u']yZz Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
=3h
Jti9[
Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
`::j\3B&Y- his little pop masterpieces.
A<H]uQ> p({|=+bl Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
5r8
[" polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
"AJ>pU3 jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
Jnt
r"a-4 intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
T2W^4
) underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
m|cRj{xZF as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
cEJ_z(\=hr bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
_["97>q Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
0Z
%<H\Z its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
#@5 jOi accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
r:^`005 mineral water.
x2f_>tu2 yFP#z5G The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
:\1&5Pm] truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
}KkH7XksF laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
0MzHr2?'P and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
(C QgT3V younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
%s)E}cGH and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
(/Y
gcT Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
p-/x Md If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
x[oYN9O seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
a+BA~|u^ Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
6ensNr~ea If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
;~q)^.K3 be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
Cw2+@7?| heartbreak.
Yr,1##u sR0nY8@F The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs

themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
g/yXPzLU lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
P$QfcJq&c* than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
j?(QieBH but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
G7<X l} kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
J5"*OH:f his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
G~Sfpf doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
}R x%&29& icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
VGq]id{*$ in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
@:@rks& #rwR)9iC0 Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
Vmc)or*# polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
QFYy$T+W affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
Ln|${c your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
'Ot[q^,KRG comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
%K7}yy&9C his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
wrU[#g,uvr of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
bB-v ar welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
}o-P espresso kind of guy.
