gC Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the

Xd% polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
{nV/_o$$ jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
,/w*sE intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
:/T\E\Qr underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
|Mq+QDTTw~ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
E%`J =C} bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
zl1*GVg Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
m8fj\,
X its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
ln82pQD2Y~ accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
,0! 2x"Q= mineral water.
I`0-q?l -$Z1X_~;)< The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
1tNL)x"w truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his

FU laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
%l7[eZ{Y and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
?#K.D vGJ younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
%y6Q3 @ and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
IIR+qJ__| Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.

Fv~lasW[ be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of

[{7#IZL ;b {#$#`= The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
r wq themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
Yqs=jTq`{ lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
$wUYK%. than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
c [Fc3 but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
sq'm)g kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
Wu][ A\3D1 his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
Av.tr&ZNb doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
jR/Gd01) icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
W;OGdAa_ in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
k$kE5kh,S ?Q]&; 5o Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
.RxT z9( polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
vvxxwZa=O affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
o[!'JUxZ your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
%%No XW comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
p'h'C z his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
JG!B3^qB of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
wo`.sB&T welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
<X8Urum espresso kind of guy.
