mE Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
Mhb~wDQl Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of

i=hA. y` glkH??S Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
r ^ ' polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
SLH;iqPT jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
Y:Jgr&*,z intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
m,6[; underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
j0n.+CO-{ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
\JCpwNT{P bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
M~y}0Ik Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
uu>R)iTQ%S its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
SP>&+5AydX accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
# /_ VY. mineral water.
hrXk 7}9 ]*Kv[%r07c The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
r$x;rL4 truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
!;${2 Q laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
d'b9.ki\ and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
A5_r(Z-5 younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
VssWtL and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
j[dgY1yE: Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
Nu'ox. V If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
P.m lk>r seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
k)W&ZY Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.

gP |>gy#e be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of

= hY/Yr%P s#(%u t The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
!fjB oK+ themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
v2="j lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
(A "yE4rYK than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
Ch:EL-L but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
F07X9s44E kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although

;q his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
v-/vj/4> doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
;|:R*(2 icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
T;V!>W37 in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
?-)v{4{s y0~ttfv Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
!Lw]aHb polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
(NN;1{DB8 affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
FZLx.3k4 your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
