From Illinois to Culleybacky, Co Antrim, Duke Special (aka +~Lt;xNFk
Peter Wilson) has fashioned a follow-up to his multi-platinum T\
"eq a
selling Songs from the Deep Forest . an<loLW

I Never Thought . . . resonates with equal amounts of musical " m'roU
cajoling and lyrical honesty. The mood throughout is rather q_GO;-b{
more sombre. Just check out the song titles ( Mockingbird Wish IXJ6w:E
Me Luck , Those Proverbs We Made in the Winter Must End , Why 8s@k0T<O
Does Anybody Love? , By the Skin of My Teeth , Nothing Comes C"JFN(f
Easy , Nothin' You Can Do Can Bring Me Around ). Still, the {*lRI
music is several steps above even Special's fastidious k2@|fe
methods. v;_k*y[VV$

Not even the ska-driven jauntiness of Digging an Early Grave 0CtPq`!
can take away from the overall sense of morbidity and \-2O&v'}
foreboding that, curiously, never threatens to spoil the ]?/7iM
listening pleasure. This could be because Wilson has, over the :jP4GCxU|
course of three albums, engineered the knack of mixing %s(Ri6R&
dispiriting topics with a surefooted musical approach that tl@n}
never undermines the content. =eB^(!M

Some people don't get Duke Special. They are put off by his |GqKa
appearance, which resembles a blend of Catweazle, a Grafton 0DR:qw
Street busker and the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang g"P!KPrf1p
Bang . They're also confused by his music, which owes as much 4Ww.CkRG
to burlesque and music hall as it does to pop. Those put off j3kcNb
by such superficialities miss the most important aspect of 4w)aAXK
Wilson's shtick: his forensic attention to detail. Q!&@aKl

So forget the gender-skewing dreadlocks and eyeliner. Here is nN|1cJ'.Fk
a guy who matches the lost art of the popular song with the `{ 6K~(
found sound of swirling pop/rock and symphony orchestras. With jeLC)lQ*
a bit of Bridie Gallagher thrown in for good Irish measure {YT @$K]w,
(that'll be the title track, then). /^jV-Z`
