I -{^[p p Everything the brothers Garza play is infected with pure bluesy groove
Y?t2,cm and roots rock verve. The ten songs here are Garza-ized takes on
V4\56 0 Christmas standards: "Jingle Bells," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,"
6KB^w0oA "Away in a Manger," "Feliz Navidad," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,"
(HJ$lxk<2h "Carol of the Bells," and "Silent Night." The latter two are fine
k- vA# instrumentals. "Carol of the Bells,'" especially, is a deeply satisfying
m0C{SBn-M guitar and percussion workout that embraces not only hard rhumba
(GNEYf| drumming, but funk, Mexican folk music, and screaming blues-rock.
S ;h&5.p Hopefully, their version of "Run Rudolph Run" will make Chuck Berry
HSC6;~U proud, with its rumbling upright piano and bassline, and Henry's guitar
5f{wJb2 offering his best modern read of Berry's instrumental innovation on the
sy=dY@W^ I-IV-V progression. But the real highlights here are the two originals
{yU0D*#6 that open the set. "I've Longed for Christmas" is a bona fide new
d^y86 pq. seasonal tune with its warmth, soulful wah-wah guitar, and laid-back
s" N\82z) drum kit shuffling around a slippery groove. The brothers sing
w O89&XZ< unfettered joyful harmonies about giving, peace, love, and joy ?and the
pSXE J 2k celebration of Christ's birth. "She'll Be My Everything for Christmas"
b( 1 :w"wD is inspired by Fats Domino's New Orleans brand of rhythm & blues with
>-eS&rma loose strolls up and down the keyboard and his celebration of love
