sUaUZO2V -29Sw z3l=aAw8 After spending several years as a professional songwriter, Lee Ann
&*G+-cF Womack became one of the breakout contemporary country stars of 1997
mhp&;
Q9 with her eponymous debut album. Born and raised in Jacksonville, TX,
jzuOs,:R Womack became infatuated with music at an early age, which is
-rU~ appropriate for the daughter of a disc jockey. Her father often took her
2gn*B$a to work, where she picked out records to play on the air. Following
n-h2SQl! high-school graduation, she attended South Plains Junior College in
#z|\AmZ\ Levelland, TX. The school was one of the first in the country to offer
~[@Gj{6p0 degrees in country and bluegrass music, and Womack soon became a member
bYr;~
^ of the college's band, Country Caravan. She traveled throughout the
e=11EmN9 South and California with Country Caravan and stayed with the group
sGNVZx until she left South Plains to study music business at Belmont
dg%Orvuz University in Nashville. That led to an internship in MCA's A&R
9NH"Ik* department.
8\-Q(9q( gTI!b By 1990, she had settled in Nashville, where she married and became a
l2DhFt$!= mother. She continued to attend Belmont, as well as write songs. Soon,
T [w]w
she began singing on songwriting demos and performing her own showcase
e*O-LI2O concerts. Eventually, Womack was spotted by Tree Publishing at one of
3Lxk7D>0c her showcases. In 1995, the company signed her after listening to one of
\]y4e^FZZ her original demos. While she was a staff writer at Tree, she co-wrote
uV]4C^k;`[ songs with Ed Hill, Bill Anderson, Sam Hogin, and Mark Wright. Her songs
,hj5.;M were recorded by Anderson and Ricky Skaggs. Within a year after signing
>U~B"'!xV to Tree, Womack signed to Decca Records as a recording artist. Wright
_":yUa0D was hired as the producer for Womack's debut album, which was comprised
'qTMY* of both original material and songs written by professional songwriters.
j1!P:( Mark Chesnutt, Ricky Skaggs, Sharon White, and Tony Brown all appeared
u-W6 hZ$ on the record, which created a buzz in the industry.
:Zy7h7P,lT -+1it Lee Ann Womack's eponymous album was released in May of 1997, and
^*7~ Wxk5 shortly after its release, it reached the Top Ten on the country chart.
Nw'3gJ: I Hope You Dance followed in mid-2000. Something Worth Leaving Behind
32_{nLV$[ appeared in mid-2002, and it was a sure fit for Womack to move into the
\`w!v,aM$ country mainstream for good. A Season for Romance was released before
X-
oHQu5 the year's end, but Womack was itching for the stage. In early 2003,
Q AJX7 Womack earned a small part on the CBS drama The District. She also
B;M{v5s~] earned two Grammy nods: one for Best Female Country Vocal Performance
#4(/#K 1j for Something Worth Leaving Behind and Best Vocal Collaboration
{~*aXu3 (Country) for her duet with Willie Nelson on "Mendocino County Line."
