wCgi@\ %$[#/H7=W 0Zh]n;S3m After spending several years as a professional songwriter, Lee Ann
Xkp?)x3~X Womack became one of the breakout contemporary country stars of 1997
YR-Ge with her eponymous debut album. Born and raised in Jacksonville, TX,
?np3*;lw Womack became infatuated with music at an early age, which is
O)$Pvll appropriate for the daughter of a disc jockey. Her father often took her

ic
aH to work, where she picked out records to play on the air. Following
"cz'|z` high-school graduation, she attended South Plains Junior College in
e+<'=_x { Levelland, TX. The school was one of the first in the country to offer
ps_q3Cyp degrees in country and bluegrass music, and Womack soon became a member
t.Yf
8Gy of the college's band, Country Caravan. She traveled throughout the
*f o>
South and California with Country Caravan and stayed with the group
n7/>+V+ until she left South Plains to study music business at Belmont
Zo<j"FG University in Nashville. That led to an internship in MCA's A&R
M(?0c}z department.

ck

<q&4Y+b she began singing on songwriting demos and performing her own showcase
"0 $UnR concerts. Eventually, Womack was spotted by Tree Publishing at one of
ly#jl5wmT her showcases. In 1995, the company signed her after listening to one of
a"&cm'\lL her original demos. While she was a staff writer at Tree, she co-wrote
/2'l=R5# songs with Ed Hill, Bill Anderson, Sam Hogin, and Mark Wright. Her songs
;0lY_ii were recorded by Anderson and Ricky Skaggs. Within a year after signing
bXSAZWf to Tree, Womack signed to Decca Records as a recording artist. Wright
Xe&p.v was hired as the producer for Womack's debut album, which was comprised
)|/%]@` N of both original material and songs written by professional songwriters.
V8Ri2&|3 Mark Chesnutt, Ricky Skaggs, Sharon White, and Tony Brown all appeared
_2Mpzv on the record, which created a buzz in the industry.
/0o#V-E) 5> lIrBf Lee Ann Womack's eponymous album was released in May of 1997, and
)<lQJ#L86a shortly after its release, it reached the Top Ten on the country chart.
}3_> I Hope You Dance followed in mid-2000. Something Worth Leaving Behind
FGzKx9I9 appeared in mid-2002, and it was a sure fit for Womack to move into the
"n_X4e+18P country mainstream for good. A Season for Romance was released before
bjo}95 the year's end, but Womack was itching for the stage. In early 2003,
FA+"t^q
Womack earned a small part on the CBS drama The District. She also
txvo7?Y*4 earned two Grammy nods: one for Best Female Country Vocal Performance
kD0bdE| for Something Worth Leaving Behind and Best Vocal Collaboration
80ox$U (Country) for her duet with Willie Nelson on "Mendocino County Line."
