A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Ruebery has taught guitar in schools across the country and been an in-demand session musician for a variety of Welsh acts. In turn, the gorgeous, melodic ballad ‘Because of You’ is bridal waltz material, something you might hear played for a bride and groom as they have their first dance. The lyrics are certainly wedding friendly: “For you, I live my life with you, it’s always love that brings us through”. Yes, it’s schmaltzy, but songs like this have paid the bills and then some for countless mainstream artists. Besides, Ruebery makes up for the generic lyrics with his lovely arrangement of the other musical elements, not least of all his beautiful, rich voice. The dead air, wind and sea sound effects that introduce ‘In My Dream’ take the album in a slightly darker direction. A breath is taken, a guitar starts up, and Ruebery asks, “Are you drowning? I can’t see you, wind and tide take you away”.
