vP{;'R P0XVR_TJf Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
9EKc{1
z sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
6`;+| H<$ melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
gVI2{\a percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
k;?E,!{ samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
L64cCP* household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
X"3Za[9j the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
h5.AM?*TNd the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
c9)5G+
adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
B5fF\N^ {>R'IjFc High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
D'3. T{*rH Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
7H5t!yk|9 Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
F otHITw[ instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
qI#ow_lL# traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
uV+.(sjH bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
3Mt Alc0xp mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
x$Tf IFy The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
mY !LGN emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
<<.%Gk hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
(GI]Uyn growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
vQIN#;m4 is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
Qv>rww] their extending, enveloping braches.
