pvY BhTz0 67A g.f6- Z&Xp9"j,@; After spending several years as a professional songwriter, Lee Ann
WFG`-8_e[I Womack became one of the breakout contemporary country stars of 1997
h+j{;evN with her eponymous debut album. Born and raised in Jacksonville, TX,
G!.%Qqs Womack became infatuated with music at an early age, which is
UHFI4{Wz appropriate for the daughter of a disc jockey. Her father often took her
D
]G=sYt to work, where she picked out records to play on the air. Following
1i/&t[ high-school graduation, she attended South Plains Junior College in
`
*q>E Levelland, TX. The school was one of the first in the country to offer
~;yP{F8? degrees in country and bluegrass music, and Womack soon became a member
@3Gr2/a of the college's band, Country Caravan. She traveled throughout the
/<Yz;\:Jy South and California with Country Caravan and stayed with the group
NM4b]> until she left South Plains to study music business at Belmont
+AYB0`X) University in Nashville. That led to an internship in MCA's A&R
5LzP0F
U department.
aM|;3j1p +\U#:gmw By 1990, she had settled in Nashville, where she married and became a
DLd1Cl:"~: mother. She continued to attend Belmont, as well as write songs. Soon,
mY&(&'2T" she began singing on songwriting demos and performing her own showcase
0{qe1pb w concerts. Eventually, Womack was spotted by Tree Publishing at one of
# "!q_@b,D her showcases. In 1995, the company signed her after listening to one of
m*~Iu<5L her original demos. While she was a staff writer at Tree, she co-wrote
&%r<_1 songs with Ed Hill, Bill Anderson, Sam Hogin, and Mark Wright. Her songs
]? %*3I were recorded by Anderson and Ricky Skaggs. Within a year after signing
f7?IXDQ>! to Tree, Womack signed to Decca Records as a recording artist. Wright
>8.o was hired as the producer for Womack's debut album, which was comprised
_:~I(c6 of both original material and songs written by professional songwriters.
_p;=]#+c& Mark Chesnutt, Ricky Skaggs, Sharon White, and Tony Brown all appeared
E~`l/ W on the record, which created a buzz in the industry.
,dXJCX8so q}cm"lO$ Lee Ann Womack's eponymous album was released in May of 1997, and
)<[)
7` shortly after its release, it reached the Top Ten on the country chart.
].HHTCD`c I Hope You Dance followed in mid-2000. Something Worth Leaving Behind
m aOt/- appeared in mid-2002, and it was a sure fit for Womack to move into the
T
_Cj=>L country mainstream for good. A Season for Romance was released before
raJv
$P the year's end, but Womack was itching for the stage. In early 2003,
SSysOeD+ Womack earned a small part on the CBS drama The District. She also
S(PU"}vZy earned two Grammy nods: one for Best Female Country Vocal Performance
'w?}~D.y
for Something Worth Leaving Behind and Best Vocal Collaboration
5F$~ZDu (Country) for her duet with Willie Nelson on "Mendocino County Line."
