From Illinois to Culleybacky, Co Antrim, Duke Special (aka X}Fv*
Peter Wilson) has fashioned a follow-up to his multi-platinum V ZGhF!To
selling Songs from the Deep Forest . 3 Gkw.

I Never Thought . . . resonates with equal amounts of musical 10^=

cajoling and lyrical honesty. The mood throughout is rather /[ M~##%:
more sombre. Just check out the song titles ( Mockingbird Wish Rz]bCiD3 B
Me Luck , Those Proverbs We Made in the Winter Must End , Why -9EbU7>!
Does Anybody Love? , By the Skin of My Teeth , Nothing Comes m|[Hhw=f
Easy , Nothin' You Can Do Can Bring Me Around ). Still, the |/$#G0X;H
music is several steps above even Special's fastidious 3u<2~!sR
methods. cs)hq4-L`

Not even the ska-driven jauntiness of Digging an Early Grave ]& >)=b!,
can take away from the overall sense of morbidity and #96a7K
foreboding that, curiously, never threatens to spoil the ;Wdo*ysW
listening pleasure. This could be because Wilson has, over the 40XI\yE_?
course of three albums, engineered the knack of mixing XRkqMq%
dispiriting topics with a surefooted musical approach that Jt"Wtr
never undermines the content. V96BtVsB

Some people don't get Duke Special. They are put off by his 9q?gmAn.
appearance, which resembles a blend of Catweazle, a Grafton }$ der
Street busker and the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang 7=9jXNk Y
Bang . They're also confused by his music, which owes as much ]g :ZokU
to burlesque and music hall as it does to pop. Those put off uwJkqlUOz
by such superficialities miss the most important aspect of 1+'3{m \5T
Wilson's shtick: his forensic attention to detail. +zvK/Fj2q

So forget the gender-skewing dreadlocks and eyeliner. Here is paY%pU
a guy who matches the lost art of the popular song with the @z.!Dby
found sound of swirling pop/rock and symphony orchestras. With t{9Ph]e
a bit of Bridie Gallagher thrown in for good Irish measure
