Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
:*ZijN*{)$ Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
>K<cc#Aa his little pop masterpieces.
G{!(2D 4! ~3Za"q*0s Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
,9M2'6= polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
HV'M31m~q jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
Y4+]5;B8 intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
I/%L,XyRI underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
(-],VB
(+ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
JAM]neKiX bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
N,Js8Z" Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
2r!-
zEV its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
,|GjrT{vf accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
jrxq558 mineral water.
`H q*l"8 Ljiw9*ZI The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
5i}g$yjZ< truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
Q3Z?Z;2aR laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
b@Dt]6_UL and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
S_nAO\h younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
YNl".c and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
hT,rc
Ikg: Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
;" D~F If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
[c -|`d^ seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
XAi0lN{, Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
db=S*LUbl If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
@4Zkkjc4b be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
%pH|2VB# heartbreak.
{LVA_7@ _>aP5g?Ep The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
Vr d16s
themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
T@`Al(' lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
LE)$_i8gX than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
Jh<s '&FR but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
S{v]B_N[M kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
Ml;`
*; his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
$TS97'$ doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
pq\N2d icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
