From Illinois to Culleybacky, Co Antrim, Duke Special (aka "Y]ZPFh#.
Peter Wilson) has fashioned a follow-up to his multi-platinum DME?kh>7
selling Songs from the Deep Forest . nV3 7` I

I Never Thought . . . resonates with equal amounts of musical {p|%hhTK%
cajoling and lyrical honesty. The mood throughout is rather r.b6E%D
more sombre. Just check out the song titles ( Mockingbird Wish <cv1$ x ~P
Me Luck , Those Proverbs We Made in the Winter Must End , Why Bh,)5E^m
Does Anybody Love? , By the Skin of My Teeth , Nothing Comes *ZR@z80i
Easy , Nothin' You Can Do Can Bring Me Around ). Still, the +M##mRD
music is several steps above even Special's fastidious ` G=L07
methods. "&#WMi

Not even the ska-driven jauntiness of Digging an Early Grave Ws* PMK.0
can take away from the overall sense of morbidity and [Z#.]g

foreboding that, curiously, never threatens to spoil the wUCDJY:,1
listening pleasure. This could be because Wilson has, over the O)xEF~DaD
course of three albums, engineered the knack of mixing NhoS7 y(
dispiriting topics with a surefooted musical approach that "YzTMKu
never undermines the content. reM

Some people don't get Duke Special. They are put off by his dI0
bTw|s/
appearance, which resembles a blend of Catweazle, a Grafton rF'^w56
Street busker and the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang 'hlB;z|T
Bang . They're also confused by his music, which owes as much L_gsG|xX
to burlesque and music hall as it does to pop. Those put off ;V"yMWjc
by such superficialities miss the most important aspect of )qyx|D
Wilson's shtick: his forensic attention to detail. t$y&=v

So forget the gender-skewing dreadlocks and eyeliner. Here is < R|)5/9
a guy who matches the lost art of the popular song with the ll(e,9.D

a bit of Bridie Gallagher thrown in for good Irish measure Z9"{f)T
(that'll be the title track, then). {V%%^Zhwy
