G*p |K_%]1*riC Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
7f+@6jqD\) sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
!-tw melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
2*Qi4%s# percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
:+6W%B samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
pMT7 /y- household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
IDn<5# the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
h&K$(}X the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
C W#:' adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
kf>3T@ WYb}SI(E High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
7zCJ3p Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
Hmr f\(x Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
j7ZxA* instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
6&0@k^7~ traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
_U
&HXQ8X bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
AE>W$x8P mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
<&Xl b0 The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
xgMh@@e emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
N$kxf hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
i<F7/p "- growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
vN^.MR+< is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
VA[EY`8 their extending, enveloping braches.
