|x ~<Dc>0* i(l'f# Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
RgQ;fYS sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
ktMUTL(B melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
J91O$szA percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
z$q:Yg samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
$kM8E@x2 household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
>FRJvZ6 the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
Nsd7?|@HI the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
5csqu^/y adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
"~uo4n~H G^ 2a<?Di High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
wV,l }Xb- Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
a!!>}e>Cj* Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
B2uLfi$q instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
'+Gy)@c traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
#P''
+$5, bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
|k-IY]6 mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
:d5fU: The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
N+[ |"v emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
|,G=k,?_p hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
E+.%9EKU growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
6}>:sr is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
!_|rVg. their extending, enveloping braches.
