K
V -WR<tkK Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
_OS,zZ0 sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
[7g-M/jvY melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
;t,v/(/3 percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
ZU;j
z[} samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
F6b;qb6n household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
}qWB=,8HQ the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
]0MuXiR the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
p=zTY7L adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
,nGQVb TtKKU4 yp High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
Q#.E-\=^ Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
5hDy62PRr Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
m{~L Fhhd1 instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
ll- KK`Ka traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
u8`S*i/)m bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
,'9R/7%s mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
t7sEY The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
e=eip?p emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
8.7q
-<Q hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
;DVg[# growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
m|t\w|B2 is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
N:S2X+}( their extending, enveloping braches.
