i XPe H"vkp~u]I Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
-d)+G%{ sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
MO%kUq|pg melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
SCL8.%z D percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
I3hN7 samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
6F:<c household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
(iJ9ekB the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
TfnBPO the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
]L/AW adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
FNR<=M ?F"mZu High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
cnraNq1 Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
2>*b.$g Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
[ f;o3 instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
O48*"Z1 traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
3L^]J}| bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
?aWMU?S mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
1"wZ [. The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
ZG$PW<73~ emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
m <'&`B; hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
H&SoVi_V growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
d#1yVdqRl is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
h.jO3q their extending, enveloping braches.
