>)6k)$x%% v{;^>"5o Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
~nRbb;M sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
i;fU],aK! melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
nO
`R++ percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
SQ-CdpT< samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
:0'vz M household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
#tN!^LLi the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
8;$zD]{D1 the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
B\\M%!a> adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
&~V6g(9 MuF{STE>-> High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
X86r`} Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
ZZrvl4h Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
~S~4pK instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
h
;1D T traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
_g%,/y 9y bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
D_M73s!U mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
Kb~i9x& The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
#k|f%!-Vo emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
irF+(&q]jh hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
#'8'5b growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
,m[#<}xXA is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
TT^L)d their extending, enveloping braches.
