Vt& Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
3$kv%uf{ sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
6Ymo%OT melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
y?R <g^A percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
fbx;-He! samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
cVP49r}}v household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
1+i the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
@h7GTA \ the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
!3X%5=#L4 adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
QLpTz"H {7pE9R 5 High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
9^Vx*KVrU Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
d@>k\6%j Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
n4r( Vg1GS instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
;ijfI traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
\ \mO+N47i bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
EH!EyNNb mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
=VX<eV The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
cnUU1Uz> emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
<,]CVo hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
->"h5h growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
gU 2c--` is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
d8 BK/b their extending, enveloping braches.
