>fZ N?>` p@B/S(Xi Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
`N;}Gf-' sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
UqVcN$^b melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
\tv^],^` percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
w5/`_m! samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
VN3"$@-POK household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
cD
^`dn%$ the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
z"7I5N the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
BhAWIH8@C adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
&8=wkG% )y~FeKh High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
K<k!sh Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
9Yu63s ia Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
q47>RWMh% instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
=*paa traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
WY>r9+A?W bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
p2m@0ou mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
[D;wB|+, The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
~7CQw^"R@ emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
V$ 8go#5 hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
qKt*<KGeY growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
kHWW\?O is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
o )\\(^ld their extending, enveloping braches.
