q4UA]+-* =N);v\ Q$! Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
dV?5Q_} sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
B$?qQ|0:= melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
$3X-rjQtW percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
{ m8+Wju} samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
K={qU[_O household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
^O^:$nXhYy the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
)U:2z-X&e the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
pbHsR^ adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
._z'g_c( B`$L' High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
f-2$
L Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
S<nq8Ebmw Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
6+K_ Z\ instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
r,(et traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
xKOq[d/8 bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
zVv04_: mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
z5Qs@dG The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
W2-=U@ emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
Lh$dzHq hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
~Z$bf>[(R7 growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
XH7xT@ is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
E3/:.t their extending, enveloping braches.
