z&cfFx#h) Kxh)'aal Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
69O?sIk sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
FSc730rM melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
e>sr)M percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
\'BKI; samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
}yS"C fM household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
kZPj{^c: the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
k&yy_r
the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
>d#B149 adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
*N< 22w Kd7OnU High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
|Z#)1K Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
[4PG_k[uTJ Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
sL+/Eeb` c instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
e,:@c3I traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
?6tuo:gP bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
lq1pgM ?Kf mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
3u+~!yz The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
/$+ifiFT emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
6D w[n hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
a8A8?: growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
o5. q is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
1w1(FpQO. their extending, enveloping braches.
