9%obq/Lb YtLt*Ig% Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
vW@=<aS Z sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
ba9?(+i$h melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
t"I77aZ$A percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
V>3X\)qu samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
XQw9~$ household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
ChQxa the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
Lu%b9Jk the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
_DEjF)S adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
:.`2^ u9p$YJ High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
l9"s>P U Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
;-Aa|aT! Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
+1!ia] instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
>+T)#.wo& traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
<wHP2|<l* bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
>/6 _ ^ mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
{id4:^u&; The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
MLp9y# emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
%!#azI hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
]hV*r@d growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
%B?=q@!QWn is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
iH'p>s5L their extending, enveloping braches.
